Yuqiao Reservoir Sustainable Village Demonstration Project
– Manure and Solid Waste Treatment Design-Build Project (2005-2006)
•Yuqiao Reservoir, located in Jixian County, is the water resource for 7 million urban population in Tianjin. There are many villages and farmers live along the reservoir, which manures and solid wastes are not properly managed and caused rainwater runoff to pollute the water quality of Yuqiao Reservoir. Sustainable Village Demonstration Project is to identify the best management practice to collect, treat, and utilize manures to prevent reservoir water pollution, and generate organic fertilizer for farming and biogas for farmer cooking and lighting.
•Project Scope: design-build a demonstration project in one village to collect, treat, and dispose of pigging manures, human wastes/solid waste and utilizing biogas for villagers’ daily life.
•Client: US EPA / Tianjin EPB
•Implementation Period: Oct. 2007 – Sep. 2009
•ESD China undertaking: provided technical solution and process design and selected/supervised the contractor to build the manure digesters and biogas treatment facilities in Jixian; provided manure application plan and training to farmers to best utilize the digested manures in farmlands to prevent runoff, and assist developing sustainable operation of the village manure treatment.
•Highlights: Yuqiao Reservoir is the sole source water for Tianjin urban 7 million residents. The project’s experiences were applied to other villages along the reservoir protecting the quality of source water.
